Ferarri 488 GTB
The mid-rear-engine, V8-powered 488 GTB name marked a return to the classic Ferrari model designation, with the 488 in its moniker indicating the engine’s unitary displacement, with the GTB standing for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 puts out a robust 670 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds (at 2,000 rpm in third gear), thanks in part to work carried out on the turbine to reduce friction and inertia. Ferrari’s engineers dedicated resources to perfecting the 488 GTB’s sound, too, creating a distinctive exhaust note.
Clearly, the choice of a rigid hard top was essential to the character of the new Ferrari, guaranteeing a significant improvement in in-car comfort. The RHT was a world first for a mid-rear-engined car when introduced on the 458 Spider.
